How long does it take to receive your VA benefits once you are processed at ICC?

Certification usually takes 2-3 days. Once your information has been sent to the VA for processing, it could take another 30 days.

What happens if I drop a class?

Withdrawing from a class may result in overpayment and repayment of any money received for the dropped class. Please see the ICC VA office for more information before withdrawing from a class. If you do drop a class, please bring a revised schedule to the ICC VA office within 10 days.

Once I have applied for benefits, what do I have to do each semester to get paid?

After signing up for classes you must bring a copy of your schedule to the Veteran Affairs office. This must be done each semester.

Students receiving 1606, or Chapter 30 benefits must verify their enrollment at the end of each month. You can verify by calling (888) 442-4551 and follow the automated prompts or can verify online through WAVE.

What are approved programs?

While you are using VA benefits at ICC, the VA will only allow certification for classes that apply toward the requirements for an approved degree/certificate. If the VA won’t pay for a class you are taking, it’s possible that the class is not in the graduation requirements for the degree or certificate you are seeking or you may be enrolled in a non-approved program. Generally, enrollment in online classes can be certified through VA. However, the VA does not allow certification for enrollment in distance learning for remedial classes. Additionally, enrollment in distance learning classes can affect your eligibility for Basic Housing Allowance (BAH) under the Post 9/11 GI Bill®.

Chapter 33 (Post 9/11 GI Bill®) Students
You are required to be over half time to be eligible for your BAH (housing allowance). 7 credit hours is greater than half time.

How can I check the remaining entitlement of my benefits?

You can check your benefits balance at WAVE. Chapter 33 recipients can check remaining entitlement on ebenefits

Can I use the Illinois Veterans Grant (IVG), or the Illinois National Guard Grant (ING) and my GI Bill® benefits concurrently?

Yes, you can use state grants and your federal benefits at the same time. The state benefits cover your tuition and the federal benefit sends payment directly to you, the student.

Students receiving 100% of Chapter 33 Post 9/11 benefits will not want to use IVG benefits to cover tuition, rather allowing their GI Bill® to cover all tuition and fees, leaving those unused IVG units available for future use, perhaps after GI Bill® benefits expire.
